Being a trivia buff, I enjoy sharing worthless trivia. It's always fun to know things that aren't important but are interesting. Check out this article for more of my worthless knowledge! Sometimes I just need to tell others some of the junk bouncing around in my head! So here it goes:
1. Did you know that on October 1, 1903 Henry Ford introduced the Model T which sold for $825. Wow! $825.00; no wonder only the rich could afford to own an automobile! Now don't you feel better just knowing that?
2. Or how about this one? Bet you didn't know the first "talkie" movie, The Jazz Singer starring Al Jolson, opened in New York City on October 6, 1927. Quite a change from today's theaters where the "talkies" can almost blast you out of your seat with the sound systems of today.
3. Speaking of New York City, have you ever ridden on the Subway there? I lived there for awhile and can't imagine getting around the city without it. The NYC Subway began operating on October 27, 1904. It ran from City Hall to West 145th St. It was the world's first underground and underwater rail system.
4. October is National Popcorn Month. Now I know that makes you happy. I don't know about you but I have the hardest time passing a popcorn vendor and not buying a bag of the stuff. Interesting isn't it that the "talkies" and popcorn are both connected to October. After all, what's a good movie without popcorn!
5. October is also the anniversary of one of the darkest days of our history. On October 29, 1929 the stock market crashed. This was the beginning of the Great Depression.
Aren't you thankful for October? Not only is it one of our prettiest months here in the USA with all the colors of fall, it also brought us the famous Model T automobile, the subway system, and talkies. We celebrate popcorn in October. And history reminds us that "times aren't as bad as they could be." My, my, there is more than Halloween to October!
