The Merdeka Square also known as Dartan Merdeka, is situated in the capital of Malaysia in Kula Lumpur. Towards the front of the square lies the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. At midnight on the 31st of August 1957 the British Union Flag was lowered and the Malaysian flag was hoisted for the first time. The Merdeka Square since that day has been the popular venue for the National Day Parade, also called the Hari Merdeka Parade, each year. The literal translation of the name Merdeka Square means independence square. Initially the area was home to the Selangor Club’s (at present the Selangor club is called the Royal Selangor Club) cricket ground. Around the Merdeka Square one can find numerous buildings that are of historical importance. The tallest flagpole in the world lies in Merdeka Square towards the south of the square; the flagpole stands at a height of 95 meters. Some of these buildings include the modern Dayabumi Complex, a century old Gothic styled building, St. Mary’s Anglican Cathedral, a building that goes back to 1909, the Memorial Library, the National History Museum, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and the Royal Selangor Club Complex. The Royal Selangor Club, which was built in 1890, has Tudor style architecture; this is in contrast to the Moorish architecture of the nearby Sultan Abdul Samad building. Kuala Lumpur offers a myriad of faces from the bustling streets, richly scented nightlife to the rise of a modern metropolis that serves to please everyone.
