The Golden Bauhinia Square in Hong Kong is dominated by a historically significant monument of an elaborately designed Bauhinia flower. It stands as a commemoration of the time when the former British colony of Hong Kong returned to Chinese sovereignty. There 206 stone based tablets that form the flower, each signifying a specific year of this special period in Hong Kong’s history, whilst there are also Chinese characters engraved on its sides. The upper part of the flower is topped with rings to highlight Hong Kong’s decision to belong to China.
The Bauhinia flower sculpture is still highly respected by many local people who come by each day to witness the daily flag raising ceremony. On the 1st, 11th and 21st day of each month, a more extensive flag raising ceremony is hosted whereby the Police Silver Band plays Hong Kong’s national anthem, followed by music from the Police Bagpipe Band.
