One of the most well-known annual summertime events hosted by NYC is the Museum Mile Festival - the event of choice for art enthusiasts. Established in 1979 to promote public support of the arts in NYC, the Manhattan festival has attracted millions to experience special exhibitions and permanent collections in ten different museums, as well as live music such as jazz and string quartets in front of the museums.
Held on the second Tuesday of June each year, the festival offers free admission to the ten museums on 5th Avenue from 82nd to 105th Street. The museums include: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Jewish Museum and the National Design Museum, to name but a few. It has been called ‘New York’s biggest block party’, taking over the entire upper east side of Manhattan for the duration of the festival.
