New York City (NYC) is one of the world’s most eclectic cities to travel to, offering everything from a colourful history to a truly remarkable arts scene. Moreover, the city’s offerings transform dramatically based on the time of year - so visitors can take their pick from a quintessential winter wonderland experience, a warm-weathered, activity-filled holiday during the summer, or anything in between.
But while New York City has its charms at any time of year, one of the most popular times to visit is undoubtedly during the summer - one reason being that the city hosts countless festivals and events during the warmer months. The city beams with cultural events ranging from theatre and art shows to dance, music and literature events. And, of course, the warm weather makes strolling the city - and particularly Central Park - all the more enjoyable.
One of the most well-known annual summertime events hosted by NYC is the Museum Mile Festival - the event of choice for art enthusiasts. Established in 1979 to promote public support of the arts in NYC, the Manhattan festival has attracted millions to experience special exhibitions and permanent collections in ten different museums, as well as live music such as jazz and string quartets in front of the museums.
Held on the second Tuesday of June each year, the festival offers free admission to the ten museums on 5th Avenue from 82nd to 105th Street. The museums include: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Jewish Museum and the National Design Museum, to name but a few. It has been called ‘New York’s biggest block party’, taking over the entire upper east side of Manhattan for the duration of the festival.
If you’re thinking about a trip to New York City for the Museum Mile Festival or any other popular events for that matter, then it's important that you plan well in advance. But, no matter how you plan to get to the city or which of the New York hotels you choose to stay in, you should be able find something that suits your needs. Then, with your most important travel arrangements made, you can focus on researching activities in the city during your holiday.
With so much on offer - like the Museum Mile Festival - it’s easy to see why the Big Apple is such a popular getaway destination for holidaymakers the world over. However, just be sure that you are prepared and plan your summer holiday in advance to avoid missing your favourite events.
