We are going to speak about several designers, whose names have become an essential part of jeans history. Let’s start with Katharine Hamnett – one of the few British fashion designers, who has acquired worldwide distinction. She was born in Kent in 1948. In her collections she always changes the looks of denim. She colors the fabric with pastels, decorates it with crystal and spangles, political slogans and psychedelical pictures. In 1985 she even cut a pair of jeans into pieces to maintain anti-fashion. Since 1986 Katharine Hamnett produces her collection called Katharine Hamnett Denim in Italy.

Giorgio Armani is a well-known Italian designer born in 1934. He has become famous worldwide in the beginning of the 1980s when he demonstrated a new approach to jackets’ cut. His expressive personal style was for the first time called “Italian jeans style”. Jeans by Armani are tight on the thighs, relaxed on legs and set off the figure. His tailor made jeans collections are distinguished by their fundamental character, new color and fabric solutions.

Elio Fiorucci was born in Italy in 1935. Fiorucci brand was created in the 1970s. Elio Fiorucci established a principally new style of trading. His shops in Milan changed their looks all the time and to attract potential customers they had loud music playing, soda pop machines and even hamburgers. Fiorucci’s jeans shop still remains one of the most dynamical in Milan.

However, Elio Fiorucci turned out to be not only a talented tradesman; he was also a creative designer. His jeans cuts set off women’s figure; he used bright colors and innovative materials. He was the first one to use fabric with prints and embroidery. His customized jeans collections were cheerful, pure and natural and were meant for young women. Today Fiorucci brand is supported by Japanese company Edwin.

Our talk about designers of custom tailored jeans would be incomplete without mentioning Yves Saint Laurent, who once said he wished he had invented blue jeans. This well-known French couturier was born in 1936. He was always able to create something really luxurious out of a quite common piece of clothes. His first collection was presented in 1962 and was made on the basis of tarpaulins. He used denim for the first time in his collection “Rive Gauche” in 1969. This was a redingote coat with suitable shoes and a tight jacket. Yves Saint Laurent’s jeans trousers of YSL collection have become an integral part of the mid 1970s.

Gloria Vanderbilt is an American fashion designer for the upper classes. She was born in New York in 1924. She popularized designer jeans among general public of American women in the end of the 1970s. Most of them needed something more comfortable and more longwearing than tight and expensive European jeans. Gloria Vanderbilt’s jeans collections “stretch” and “status” were a tremendous success. Nowadays they are produced by Gitano Company, USA.

Gianni Versace was born in 1946 in Italy and killed by his own wife in 1998. This world-famous Italian designer is extremely popular among movie and rock-n-roll stars due to his bright coloring and theatrical splendor of costumes. His clothes were always magnificently decorated with embroidery or prints. His jeans brand is called Versace Jeans Couture and starting from 1990 belongs to Manifatture Ittierre Spa, Italy. One should say, it is quite a stylish and expensive jeans brand. 1991 it was announced the leader of best women’s jeans segment.
