Position players complied with their physical and medical exams on Monday just before their practice. However, Williams did not arrive and has not communicated his decision to Torre, head coach, either. What rests in everyone’s mind is that no one is sure of his return.

Williams has played for the Yankees since the start of his career back in 1985 on his 17th birthday and six years later he moved up to the major league in 1991.

The reason for him not to show up is due to the fact that Melky Cabrera was assigned as the fourth outfielder and Jason Giambi has been elected as hitter and first baseman. These changes caused there to be no room for a fifth outfielder and Williams would not be counted within the team’s regular roster.

Cashman, Torre and teammates have made several attempts to contact Williams but all have been unsuccessful and everyone is certain that he will not return until Torre fully convinces him to.

Although some say Williams is not likely to play for another team, after being with the Yankees for 22 years, but has not informed anyone that he will be retiring before the start of the Major League Baseball season.

Resentment is obvious in this matter but only time will tell if Williams decides to go back or retire. Torre left the first day of practice due to his cold and has not made any comments regarding the situation to reporters or any type official announcement.

As for teammates, manager and coach all feel it would a shame to loose a player like Bernie Williams.
